Istoria Berkley este reprezentativa pentru ideea visului american fiind definita de inceputuri umile si rezultate spectaculoase. Aceasta inseamna mai mult decat povestea celui care a pus bazele companiei, este si povestea muncitorilor dedicati si a cumparatorilor loiali brandului.
Povestea Berkley incepe in 1937 in Spirit Lake, un mic orasel din Iowa, SUA. Berkley Bedell in varsta de 16 ani, pasionat de pescuitul la musca, a decis sa puna bazele unei afaceri cu muste artificiale. Cu 50 de dolari castigati din vanzarea ziarelor si multa munca a inceput produca muste artificiale in casa parintilor sai, utilizand materiale usor de procurat (printre care par de la cainele familiei si pene de la gainile din curte). Astfel ia fiinta compania Berkley Fly care isi vinde produsele realizate magazinelor de echipament pentru pescuit si turistilor veniti la pescuit in zona.
Cand a terminat liceul in 1939 deja angajase cateva persoane care realizau muste artificiale si strune in propriile locuinte.
Dupa terminarea universitatii si revenirea din cel de-al doilea razboi mondial Berkley a infiintat in orasul natal in 1945 Berkley and Company, afacere centrata pe producerea strunelor metalice pentru pescuit.
Berkley a inceput sa produca strune metalice cu invelis din nylon ( Steelon Leader) iar sloganul companiei a devenit “strune din nylon cu inima de otel”.
Interesul lui Berkley s-a concentrat apoi pe producerea firului monofilament. Dupa ce a obtinut o licenta de la DuPont pentru producerea acestuia, s-a intors in Spirit Lake pentru a dezvolta propriul echipament de productie. In scurt timp compania ajunge sa comercializeze propriile branduri de monofilament ca Dew Flex. Numeroasele incercari pe care le-a facut in domeniul producerii firelor monofilament au dus la realizarea inovatiei brandului - Trilene.
In 1959 Berkley a prezentat Trilene in aceeasi perioada in care DuPont lansa Stren. Pentru a facilita vanzarea noului fir, Berkley a trimis mii de role magazinelor rugand proprietarii sa le ofere celor mai buni pescari pentru a le incerca pe mulinetele de spinning, iar noul produs a avut succes.
Urmatorii 40 de ani au fost marcati de dezvoltarea companiei. In anii 60 Berkley a inceput fabricarea lansetelor ceea ce a favorizat extinderea la nivel international din anii 70. In anii 80 a lansat momelile artificiale realizate din plastic moale.
Din aceasta perioada si pana in prezent Berkley a acordat importanta deosebita si resurse dezvoltarii tehnologiei care a permis lansarea unor produse la standarde superioare ce au devenit puncte de referinta pe piata de profil. Strategia brandului a permis aparitia a numeroase produse inovatoare printre care se numara Trilene, Lighting Rod, Powerbait, FireLine, Gulp! sau Gulp!Alive.
